Raynmaker Web Design is the website design and internet consulting spinoff of Auto Wax Pros, Inc.  Both companies are owned and operated by Jim Russo, a 2008 MBA graduate of Babson College.   


How our website design service came about:
 
 
When Auto Wax Pros, Inc reopened its doors in May of 2010 after a nearly 10 year hiatus away from detailing cars we needed to find new customers quickly.  One of the very first things we did prior to printing up business cards, brochures, or spending any money on advertising was build a website.  We needed an internet brochure that served as a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, 365 days a year advertisement of our services.  The website needed to come first because we wanted our web address on all marketing materials before they were printed.   We received quotes from a variety of website development companies.  Often the price quoted on these services was well into the many thousands of dollars.  Additionally, these companies created websites for a wide range of businesses and often knew very little about the industries or the companies they were servicing.  In our case it was auto detailing that they knew very little about.  Website developers (mostly computer and IT professionals by trade) are often only able to perform as well as the content and information they’re given by their clients. 

Researching the content on many auto detailing websites we've found that there is often a major disconnect between car wash and auto detailing shop owners and the people that are building their websites.  Check out a few of your competitors websites and see if you agree.  We’re amazed at the number of bad car wash and auto detailing websites on the internet.  Some sites are professional looking (although many are not) but the amount of wrong, misspelled, and poorly worded information is sometimes scary.  It’s easy to see where the web designers got off track as the business owners sent vague and incomplete information along.  Poorly worded content is the death knell to any business’s website.  Not just because it makes your company look bad but because it’s the word and phrase triggers that tell Google or Yahoo whether or not to point customers towards your website.  Poor and carelessly written content puts a damper on how highly up on a search page your website gets placed.   Most people searching for local car washes and auto detailers won’t get past the first or second page before deciding whom to contact.   Usually within the top 10-20 search results.  In a busy and impatient world, many potential customers won’t even get past the first 2-3 search results on the very first page!  The process of making sure that websites are written tagged properly for high search engine rank is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO.   Smart content placement has made a huge difference in our website ranking and ultimately the number of new customers we have harvested from our efforts.  SEO is about getting your business's site placed as high up on a search results page as possible (#1 is ideal).  SEO considers what people are searching for on internet searches.   Specific words placed in certain areas of your website are important.  So is the linking of other websites to your website.  This is also known as backlinking.  Speaking the language of the business that you’re creating a website for helps the developer with optimizing that website properly.  This gives new potential customers in your area a greater chance for finding your website high up on internet searches. 

 

Building our own website:

We decided it was important for our detail shop to have a website even though we were on a limited budget.  With cost savings in mind, and our own knowledge of SEO, we decided to create a brochure website on our own.  We wanted something clean and to the point that also communicated the pertinent information on our company.  We included content such as pricing, service menus, company background, and education on the topic of auto detailing.  The result is this very website!  Clean, informational, and content rich.  This is a template based website.  We’ve chosen not to upgrade it to something fancier so that people can see what a clean, cost effective website looks like.   We took special steps to become visible on the major search engines and then we published our site on the internet.   It demonstrates that a company doesn't need a fancy or expensive site to get a high search engine rank. 

For our first 18 months back in the auto detailing business our shop was located in the suburban town of Dracut, MA just 5 minutes south of the New Hampshire border.   Dracut has a population of about 30,000 people.  Not a major city like Boston or New York but busy enough for a detail shop to survive and eventually thrive.   Google picked up on our website within 2 days and we got page 1 exposure for Auto Detailing in Dracut, MA right away.  Within a week we were getting inquiries from locals who had seen our listing on Google.  At first it was just 1-2 calls or emails each week.  Within a month we were averaging 5+ inquiries weekly.  After 6 weeks we were listed on page 1 as the #2 auto detailing shop in Dracut.  After 3 months and a little bit of content tinkering we were the #1 listing for the search "Auto Detailing in Dracut, MA".  Depending on the season our website averages between 1000-1800 visits per month which usually translates into 15-20 responses from prospects.  We convert about 50% of our prospects to customers so in an average month we were getting approximately 7-10 new customers from our website efforts.  This wasn’t bad considering there were 4 other detailing competitors in our town (one of them with their own website). 

Had we been located a little closer to a major city (like Boston) we may have seen more website visits and eventual clients.  Located farther away in a sleepier town there may have been less.  The point is that having a website, getting found on Google, and getting found by new customers can be a reality for your car wash or auto detailing business.  Having a website enhances your professional image and it becomes an extremely inexpensive form of advertising after it’s built.  Many websites are maintained for less than $75 a year. 

 

What makes a good website?  How will people find my website?

When we first thought about getting a website for our auto detailing business we figured the nicer it looked the more customer traffic we would get.  We soon found out that nothing was further from the truth.  While it’s nice having a website that’s pleasing to the eye these things alone will not get you found by new customers.  Search engines periodically scan the written content on your website. Because the scans are colorblind they care only about the words.  In theory, great written content on a blank white page could get a high search engine rank for a website.  A white page with just plain words isn’t a very nice brochure to look at so no company would ever create their website that way.   The example, however, certainly makes the case for a business owner to put their energies into having great written content first and then building their color and creative schemes around the writing.    Reverse the strategy and you have a really nice website that doesn’t get found by potential customers searching for new businesses.
